Man who sold stolen goods on eBay gets 14-year prison sentence

"DALLAS - A man who pleaded guilty to selling stolen goods on eBay was sentenced to more than 14 1/2 years in federal prison, the U.S. Attorney's Office said Wednesday.

Cory I. Paris, 34, also was ordered to pay $708,699 in restitution during sentencing Tuesday and must forfeit his downtown Dallas loft.

Paris pleaded guilty in November to six counts of wire fraud, three counts of interstate transportation of stolen property and one count of bank fraud.

Investigators say Paris and his co-conspirators were responsible for more than 30 burglaries at post offices, business and sporting good stores, and boutiques. The burglaries occurred in Dallas, Austin, Kansas City, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco and their surrounding areas."

Police said the investigation began after the Broward County woman visited the Target Supercenter in Viera in late February and stole items valued at $2,500, mostly from the store's electronics department. Officials said the scheme appeared to be a one-woman operation which spanned four counties -- Brevard, Orange, Broward and Miami-Dade -- and also included other retailers such as Wal-Mart, Walgreens and Ross."

"This story appeared in the Haywood (NC) County News. Instead of receiving a candle-apple red 1968 Mustang from a seller on eBay, a Haywood County man got taken for $5,000.

Police are trying to track down the money the man, a Canton resident, wired by way of MoneyGram to a supposed eBay representative in San Jose, Calif. on March 13 and March 17.

The man originally bid on the car on what he thought was an official eBay site. He was not the highest bidder when the auction ended, but later received an email that said the winner backed out of the deal and the seller wanted to know if he was still interested.

After a few more email exchanges the Canton man and the seller settled on a price of $5,000.

The man told police that he contacted eBay for instructions on purchasing a vehicle and later found out that the instructions he received by email were not official eBay instructions. The man agreed to send a first installment of $2,500 to San Jose, and after confirmation of the wire, the seller would begin the shipping process, according to a police report on file at the Canton Police Department.

The victim then received another email instructing him to submit the final installment, and he would then receive the shipping information. He sent the final payment in on "

Julie C. But Computing Which? Magazine isn't alone. AXcess News receives at least 8 emails a day that claim to come from an eBay user asking us to click on the link and verify that we are offering a product.

Known as phishing, these fraudulent emails are marked urgent. The same problem persists with eBay's online payment service, PayPal, which AXcess News contacted and closed that account due to the volume of phishers posing as PayPal. One fraudster was so brash they even used AXcess News' name with a fake social security number to transfer cash to China, PayPal's consumer security service said.

But in the case of eBay's auction site, its fraud is internal. Computing Which? says that eBay needs be more proactive in identifying counterfeit items offered for sale. It wants the auction site to warn customers about the dangers of fraud and to crack down on the unlicensed sale of medical products such as contact lenses."

It wants the site to better warn users about fraud and the dangers of identity theft. Consumer magazine Computer Which? notes the site?s Safety Center should be more visible for its users.

Jessica Ross, the magazine?s editor, tells the BBC News Web site a recent case saw a gang steal nearly $300,000 from unsuspecting eBay users.

'It was a six-man gang, they sent e-mails claiming to be from eBay, and tricked eBay users into revealing their passwords and account details.

'The gang then assumed the identity of those legitimate eBay vendors with reliable sales histories, and were able to offer non-existing goods such as Rolexes and laptop computers for sale, only to disappear with the money,' she says.

EBay says the majority of the fraudulent cases did not take place on its site.

A statement from the Internet auction site says: 'We have been led to believe that, in most of the cases, the users were contacted via e-mail - rather than on the eBay site."

A federal grand jury indicted David James Martin, 26, on three counts each of mail and wire fraud. The indictment was filed Wednesday and announced Friday.

Martin, who owned and operated Furious Computers of Charles City, has a court appearance scheduled for Dec. 21 in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids.

The case was investigated by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

"A couple were jailed yesterday after defrauding thousands of customers around the world through the internet auction site eBay. In what one detective described as the biggest online scam he had seen, the pair stole GBP 298,796 from unsuspecting bidders they called idiots.

Nicolae Cretanu, 30, was sentenced to 3,5 years and his wife Adriana, 23, was given 30 months for an elaborate scam that lasted two years.

A relative of the pair coordinated the scheme from Romania and the gang advertised fictitious goods, including cars, motorcycles, war memorabilia, electrical items, tickets to sporting events and parachute trousers, then contacted bidders saying they had failed in their attempt to secure the item.

They used sophisticated software to garner email addresses and, using a pseudonym, offered bidders a 'second chance' to purchase similar products, telling the customer to pay by money transfer through Western Union before receiving their purchase. The items always failed to materialise, London's Middlesex Guildhall crown court was told."

"Money transfer operator Western Union is teaming with London's Metropolitan Police Service to crack down on criminals that use its networks to transfer fraudulent funds.

The new initiative is being introduced to cut 'high volume' fraud, which includes Internet auction site fraud, lottery scams, cheque overpayments, false Web sites, 'honey traps' and advanced fee fraud.

Criminals conducting this kind of fraud often use money transfer services, such as Western Union, as a conduit for moving funds.

"A man who stole thousands of dollars in computer equipment and sold them on an online auction site faces a third-degree felony charge of theft, according to Collin County Detention Center records.

Michael Kenneth Anello, 44, of The Colony, was arrested last Wednesday and charged with theft between $20,000 and $100,000 for allegedly stealing $36,000 worth of miscellaneous computer equipment from his office and selling them on eBay to the highest bidder, McKinney Police Capt. Randy Roland said."

"SAN FRANCISCO -- A Southern California man involved in a scheme to defraud eBay users by taking money for cars sold through the auction Web site but were never delivered has pleaded guilty for his role in the crime.

David Hung Truong, 36, pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of wire fraud as part of a plea agreement with federal prosecutors. He faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and $250,000 in fines when he's sentenced Jan. 5, 2006."

"FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- A former employee of Cingular in Fort Collins was accused of taking cell phones intended for charity and selling them privately on eBay and police said they don't think they can file charges.

Two people contacted the Fort Collins Coloradoan Tuesday and said they had given old cell phones to two Cingular employees, with the understanding that the phones would be donated to a charitable cause. Instead, they said, the phones ended up on eBay, apparently sold by one of the people they gave the phone to."
